The mission of public health professionals and institutions in general is to “fulfill society's interest in assuring conditions in which people can be healthy.” The primary goal of the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health (GSPH) and other schools of public health is to provide the leadership, resources, research, and education needed to protect our local, national, or global communities from existing and emerging diseases and health threats.
Environmentally triggered chronic (as well as infectious) diseases pose a threat to the public health and a challenge to the practice of public health locally, nationally, and worldwide. Public health strives to improve social and economic conditions in the community, particularly in disadvantaged populations, and to establish an environment that fosters optimal health in the population being served. Its mission is achieved through the application of health promotion and disease prevention technologies, interventions, and widespread surveillance designed to improve and enhance the quality of life. |
